Biology Labs at SLC
Students in Ms. Guiltner's Biology Class are trying to answer the Experimental Question:
"How does soap affect water's surface tension?"
Students developed a hypothesis, and experimented by counting the number of water drops that can fit on a penny. They then repeated the experiment with soapy water.

Recently, students at SLC participated in a kayaking trip at Lake Dardanelle State Park. As part of this trip the students explored concepts they are learning in class such as Newton's Laws of Motion (Physical Science) and about the state parks (Arkansas Tourism). What a great hands on experience for these students to connect classroom learning to real world experiences. Thank you to LDSP for having us!

Congratulations to the Secondary Learning Center and Russellville Cyclone Virtual Academy Teacher of the Year, Micah Bennett!
Mr. Bennett has been in education for the past 16 years, the last 4 of those he has spent providing instruction in ELA and CTE to secondary students at the RSD Secondary Learning Center. He earned his Masters of Arts in Teaching through the University of Arkansas at Monticello. He continued to work towards career excellence by then going on to become National Board Certified, and he has earned the Master Professional Educator endorsement. In addition to being a National Board Certified teacher, Mr. Bennett had the experience of teaching at an international school, while living in Eastern Europe. Mr. Bennett’s experiences have brought an exceptional wealth of knowledge to the students he works with daily.
The high quality instruction provided by Mr. Bennett directly impacted student ELA ACT Aspire scores for the 2022-2023 school year. This led to the Secondary Learning Center being awarded the "Highest Achievement Award" from the Arkansas Department of Education and the Arkansas Association of Alternative Educators, during the AAAE Leadership Day at the Arkansas State Capitol this school year.
Students at SLC navigate to Mr. Bennett’s classroom all throughout the day. SLC students know when they enter Mr. Bennett’s classroom they are safe, valued, and respected. They know they are valued by the thoughts that Mr. Bennett instills in them daily, and they are respected by the actions they see Mr. Bennett exhibit daily.
The work that Mr. Bennett does at SLC each day impacts his students in more ways than just academically. Students who come to SLC have various challenges hindering their ability to thrive in the regular classroom environment. Mr. Bennett meets each student where they are at emotionally as well as academically, and puts them on a path to future success. The values he instills in each student at SLC can and has changed the trajectories of many students' lives. This year while interviewing students about the impact Mr. Bennett has on their life, one student in particular reported that, “I will be a successful senior next year, thankfully to you Mr. Bennett”.
It is clear when you get to know Mr. Bennett that he has a servant's heart, and that no award compares to the joy he feels when he has opened a students eyes to the possibility that they can overcome any circumstance they are coming from.
Mr. Bennett’s ability to maintain a highly structured environment, while adapting to the various challenges of an ALE environment make him deserving of being awarded the Secondary Learning Center and Russellville Cyclone Virtual Academy Teacher of the Year!
