Today, SLC students participated in a day packed full of STEM activities. They first started with a presentation by RSD Board Member Holli Hall, representing City Corporation, about the water filtration system! Next, students learned about catapults and designed their own in teams. Each team then launched two marshmallows to see which catapult could launch the farthest. After lunch, the activities continued and students built towers with their team using marshmallows and spaghetti noodles, trying to engineer the tallest self-standing tower. Next, the students used materials to engineer a boat that would float, and stay afloat once weights were added. We ended the day with an egg drop challenge. Students had to use the supplies provided to create a protective cover to prevent their egg from breaking when dropped from a high point. The kids enjoyed the hands on activities and stayed engaged all day. STEM activities are a hit at SLC! #SLC #RSD #EducateEquipEmpower

On Wednesday, SLC students went kayaking on Lake Dardanelle. Students were able to go on a 30 minute kayaking tour to explore the lake and wildlife up close! What a fun, hands on exploration and experience for these students. #SLC #RSD #LakeDardanelle #EducateEquipEmpower

At SLC, students earn Fun Friday points as a positive behavior reward system. This past Friday we had 22 students earn enough points to participate in Fun Friday. Since it was also Cinco de Mayo, we had a fun celebration! Thank you to the ESL Department for supplying the games and decorations for our Cinco de Mayo festivities! #SLC #RSD #ESL #EducateEquipEmpower #AchievingExcellenceTogether

As a continuation of their previous project, Mrs. Austin's Geometry class decorated the crosswalk leaving the building to bring some color to this gloomy day. The students used protractors and straightedges to create perpendicular and angle bisectors in triangles to create geometric art. It was a nice day to take the classroom outside! #engaginglearning #handsonlearning #outdoorclassroom #SLC #EducateEquipEmpower #RSD

Today is Administrative Professionals' Day, and to say we cannot do what we do without our very own Tina Weber would be an understatement. Tina is the action behind what makes the ins and outs of SLC work. We could not do what we do day in and day out without her! Thank you, Mrs. Tina, for everything you do for the faculty, staff, students and families you serve daily at SLC!

Congratulations to our April Student of the Month, Falicity Works, and our April Staff Member of the Month, Ms. Patterson! We are thankful for you both and what you bring to the SLC family! #SLC #family #RSD #AchievingExcellenceTogether

Congratulations to our February SLC Student of the Month, Owen Hughes-Jenkins, and our February SLC Staff Member of the Month, Liz Parrish. We are so thankful to have both as part of our SLC family. #SLC #RSD #family #EducateEquipEmpower

SLC students were excited to put the CKH word of the month, "Kindness," into action this week. They created a Kindness Crew to help spread kindness throughout the district. The students were able to visit Sequoyah and Dwight campuses Friday and delivered treats to some very special teachers, Mrs. Duvall and Mrs. Lemley. These ladies were so welcoming to our SLC students, allowing them to come into their classrooms and participate in kindness activities with their students. The Dwight crew was also able to see our school counselor, Ms. Carter, in action. We can't wait to plan more activities with our Kindness Crew. Be looking for future posts to see where they go next!
