Students in Ms. Guiltner's classes took a few minutes at the end of class to make Christmas ornaments for the SLC Christmas tree this week. They enjoyed having a few minutes for crafty fun. We can't wait to deck the halls!

Seniors from SLC went to UACCM on September 29th for a college campus visit. The students were able to tour each of the buildings and hear about all the opportunities UACCM offers students. At the end of the tour, the students ate lunch in the activities center and visit with students already attending the college. UACCM has not only 2-year transferable classes but also a wonderful vocational program that prepares students for the workforce. Our goal at SLC is to expose students to as many of these opportunities and let them realize that college is so much more than a classroom, its hands on experiences that train you for good paying jobs.

Ms. Shaw and Mrs. Hickenbottom have “REV”ed up student interaction through the co-teach English classes. During these activities, students are up from seats, interacting with peers, and involved with the lessons. Students have participated in social and auditory activities for analyzing multiple styles of texts. Similar activities can be seen in other co-teach setting in Secondary Learning Center.

Mr. Hettinga uses a wide array of student-centered activities to engage students in the social sciences. Most kids would think history is boring and would rather discuss current issues and trends that have an impact on their everyday lives. By implementing various teaching and learning strategies, students are able to analyze the impact of events that may have happened several hundred years ago and relate them to our culture. The teachers at SLC create student-centered learning environment where our kids’ needs are met in a real and relevant way.

Students in Ms. Guiltner's science class have been conducting investigations this week. Environmental Science students are studying the cycling of matter in Earth by studying the layering of isopropyl alcohol and mineral oil before, during, and after applying heat. The observed patterns provide evidence for the cycling of matter in Earth.
