Several SLC students were able to visit Mrs. Connerly's class at Dwight Elementary last week. Mrs. Connerly's class gave a tour of their school garden and were very excited to talk about the different vegetables they are growing and how they take care of the garden. The older students then helped the younger students paint rocks to decorate the garden.

Students in Ms. Guiltner's Biology class recently participated in a Candy Protein Synthesis Lab. They simulated protein synthesis by acting out the steps of transcription and translation in the classroom. Students chose the gene they wanted to express, transcribed it, and translated it into a protein made up of amino acids (candy) linked together with peptide bonds (toothpicks).

Student Spotlight Illianna Carrington is a junior at the Secondary Learning Center. After high school graduation, she plans to attend college and major in nursing. She is looking forward to a lengthy career as a nurse. At SLC, Illianna excels in the classroom. When asked about why she was successful at SLC, she replied, “I can pretty much work at my own speed and the teachers help and support me in anything. The counselor is the greatest person to talk to about anything and they will always work with you no matter the situation.” At SLC, we have several students like Illianna who are juggling school and adult responsibilities. We are very proud of Illianna and wish her the best.
